What Is Trauma and How Does It Heal?
An event ends, but the mind can't end it. A sound, a smell, a date… and the body returns to that moment. Trauma is the name for "not what happened, but what remains in the nervous system." And it heals. Here is how I work through this in Caddebostan.
What is trauma?
Trauma is the imprint left in the nervous system by an experience that exceeded your capacity to cope. Accidents, loss, violence, neglect or long-term hurtful relationships can be traumatic. What matters is not the "size" of the event but what it did to you.
Symptoms of trauma
- Intrusive memories, nightmares, flashbacks
- Triggers and staying constantly on guard
- Emotional numbing, disconnection, avoidance
- Sleep problems, startling easily, anger
How does trauma heal?
Within a safe relationship, at your pace: first making the present safe, then making the memory bearable, and finally reconnecting with life. With trauma-informed approaches, we work without re-living what happened.
