Phobias and Phobia Treatment
Not being able to board a plane, step into a lift, or speak in front of a group… A phobia is an intense fear you "know is irrational but still can't manage." The good news: phobias are among the fastest to improve. Here is how I work in Caddebostan.
What is a phobia, and why?
A phobia is a fear of an object or situation that isn't actually dangerous, growing through avoidance. The more you avoid, the stronger it gets, because the brain concludes "I escaped, so it must have been dangerous."
Common phobias
- Flying, heights, enclosed spaces (claustrophobia)
- Social phobia (public speaking, eye contact)
- Needle/blood and animal phobias
Treatment: reversing avoidance
The core method is gradual exposure: approaching the feared situation safely, in a controlled way, at your pace. With virtual reality (VR) support when helpful, we can experience the plane or the height safely in the room. Step by step, the brain learns something new: "nothing bad actually happens."
