Addiction and Coping With It
How many times have you said "I could stop if I wanted to"? Addiction isn't a character flaw, it's the hijacking of the brain's reward circuit. And it gets better. Here is how I work through this in Caddebostan.
What is addiction?
Addiction is being unable to stop a substance or behavior despite knowing it harms you. Beyond alcohol and drugs, gambling, gaming, social media and pornography run on the same loop: short-lived pleasure, then regret, then repetition.
Warning signs
- Amount/time keeps rising, control slips
- Restlessness, anger or low mood when stopping
- Continuing despite damage to work, relationships and health
- Hiding and denial
How we cope
We work on recognising triggers, learning to ride out cravings without giving in, and filling the emptied time and emotion in new ways. When needed we collaborate with a psychiatrist and support groups.
Frequently asked questions
Can I quit on my own?
Some manage it, but for most people support makes the process far easier and more lasting. You don't have to carry it alone.
